I've been dreading today's appointment. I was told that they always use general anesthesia for infants so that they stay still during the scan. I had even asked if sometimes they'll try to do the scan if the baby is asleep and I was told no. I know when things go wrong during surgery, it's usually due to anesthesia or blood loss, so having the anesthesia for a CT scan gave it some risk. I also didn't want my little guy to have to have it because it tends to make people feel really nauseous, and I didn't want him to go through that. I've been worried about it since the day I made the appointment.
Jesse's appointment was a 12:30, but since he was going to need anesthesia, we were told to be there 2 hours before. Jesse took a little nap and woke up at 10:00, just when it was time to leave for the appointment. After we arrived, it was mostly just a lot of waiting. We waited to be seen to fill out the paperwork. Then we waited again to go in the back so that they could take Jesse's vitals and change him into a gown. Then we waited for the CT scan.
We were paged for the CT around 12:30, so Jesse had been awake for 2 1/2 hours and was starting to get cranky. And by the time we got up to the CT room, he was asleep in the stroller. The radiologist decided to go ahead and try to get the CT without the anesthesia since Jesse was asleep and the anesthesiologist was running late. I picked him up and put him on the bed for the scanner. He woke up, so I gave him his pacifier and he went right back to sleep. They had us move into the next room while they performed the scan. And Jesse stayed still for the scan and they got the images they needed! When they were done, I picked up Jesse and put him in the stroller. By the time we were back downstairs, he was awake. He was probably only asleep for about 5 minutes, but he couldn't have picked a better 5 minutes!
